A builder friend discovered an old German (we think) poster tucked under an old house he was rennovating the other day. Can anyone translate the phrase on the poster into English?
(I just hope, hope, hope it is NOT offensive!)

I think it should read:
Melde Dich freiwillig zu den Gebirgstruppen Waffen.
Language is German - depending when it was printed it can either be from germany or from Austria (or even Switzerland)
It's a equivalent to the "Uncle Sam wants you" posters - it's not offensive it says:
Join voluntarily the mountain troops.
Waffen means "weapons" but also a specialized part of an army like airforce, infantry, navy - so there is no need to translate it here.
As the German speaking countries here in Europe are quite mountainous in certain areas there were (are) special troops to fight in the mountains or to control the borders. As serving there is a tough and dangerous job (even in times of peace) and especially in winter they were looking for volunteers - which had another advantage: Most volunteers came from the mountain villages and already knew the alps and probably needed less training than people from the cities or the flat land.
These posters are not uncommom - you will find them in almost all countries at certain times.

I would suggest that it actually reads:
"Wende dich freiwillig zu den Gebirgstruppen Waffen"
Which translates to something like:
"Turn willingly to the mountain troops"..... I think???!German to English translation - can you help?

Melde dich freiwillig zu den Gebirgstruppen Waffen -
Volunteer to the mountain troops weapons (arms)
Welde thickly voluntarily to the mountain troops weapons
